It’s probably worth having one, if only for the maps of the Kathmandu valley, since you’re likely to have a couple of days to kill during your holiday so you might as well join the massed ranks of guidebook-waving Lonely Planeteers. In fact, the Lonely Planet guide is probably the best of the bunch, although if you don’t fancy contributing to Tony Wheeler’s personal fortune, then the Rough Guide is also pretty good. There are loads of excellent second-hand bookshops in Kathmandu (Pilgrims in Thamel is the best) so you needn’t get a book before you go. You probably don’t need the latest (i.e. most expensive) edition, as they aren’t exactly "updated" a great deal between editions anyway. In fact, the last "update" was just some new exchange rates and a pretty picture. |
