Its probably worth having one, if only for the maps of the Kathmandu valley, since youre likely to have a couple of days to kill during your holiday so you might as well join the massed ranks of guidebook-waving Lonely Planeteers. In fact, the Lonely Planet guide is probably the best of the bunch, although if you dont fancy contributing to Tony Wheelers personal fortune, then the Rough Guide is also pretty good. There are loads of excellent second-hand bookshops in Kathmandu (Pilgrims in Thamel is the best) so you neednt get a book before you go. You probably dont need the latest (i.e. most expensive) edition, as they arent exactly "updated" a great deal between editions anyway. In fact, the last "update" was just some new exchange rates and a pretty picture. |
