17. Psst! Hashhash?Marijuana?

Some people consider dope essential to survive bus journeys of over 12 hours.  It needs to be used in conjunction with your waterbottle and a huge bag of pineapple biscuits.  We are not condoning this, it is illegal.

If it's your thing, don’t buy from the pushers in Kathmandu.  Some of them are quite happy to take baksheesh from the police for turning you in, and I doubt Nepali prison is much fun. Get it instead from porters, local villagers, and any other dudes who wander through your campsite by the river.  Don’t smoke on buses unless it’s a private bus hired by your company.  Even then, watch out for police checkpoints (e.g. there is one at Mugling on the Kathmandu - Pokhara road) because sometimes the rozzers get on the bus and they might smell something.

Check your bag before you leave the country.  Getting nicked at the Indian border or the airport wouldn’t add greatly to your enjoyment of the subcontinent.
